Wytch Hazel is an great listen if you like 70’s Rock with a Blue Oyster Cult meets Ghost, meets Angel Witch vibe.
The first half of the record is solid, albeit it is a bit preachy for my liking. But there is no denying talent. Guitarists Alex Haslan and Colin Hendra (vocalist as well) are masters at writing fuzzy riffs that hook you in and you will find it impossible to not be transported to That 70’s Show, complete with Red threatening to put his foot up your ass! It is a time warp to a simpler time. Funny how music can do that!
Interestingly, much of this record made me think of Dance Macabre and Spillways from Ghost. Two hits that hammer ear worms into your skull that will not relent. Like I said, Wytch Hazel can write with the best of them.
The standout aspect of Wytch Hazel is the production. The record sounds old and begs to be played on vinyl, in a basement, with a cloud of smoke.
Ignore the Jesus speak. Much like Ghost preaches the other side of Heaven and Hell, Wytch Hazel is the light side of that ying/yang bullshit. Focus on the riffs. The power of the riff always compels!
7.5 out of 10: ignore the lyrics and enjoy the Tardis ride.
