I appreciate two things. 1. Originality. 2. Oodles of mutated talent. Mutoid Man, as you would expect, has plenty of both.
Comprised of Stephen Brodsky: vocals, guitar (Cave In), Ben Koller: drums, percussion (Converge), Jeff Matz: bass, vocals, piano (High On Fire). This “supergroup” produced a killer record in my old stomping grounds of Salem MA. Witch town. If you have never been to Salem, it has a unique vibe….not to mention some passionate metal heads. On Mutants, the guys created an opus that will caress the genitals of both metal heads and rock fans alike. It’s originality fits that it was created in Salem!
Call of The Void kicks in with a odd timing pattern and a repetitive guitar “squawk” that oozes 90’s grunge. The frantic nature of the song explodes with a punk infused chorus complete with classic Misfits “ooohhh whoooa ooohhh’s.”The song is a masterclass in song writing and execution. Shout out to Matz, bass licks a delicious.
Brodsky’s vocals are top notch. Killer intro!
On Broken Glass Ceiling the band must have been taking notes from Tommy Victor of Danzig. But the comparison ends there. Instead of riffs, the band finger taps their way through the bridge and chorus. Brodsky turns into a demon half way through the track and unleashes his mutated dark side. Shredding!
Demons is Brodsky’s show off song. The track captures the essence of Salem Ma. Spooky. Evil. Dark. Funky. All words fit the track with “heart and soul!”
I could comment on every track. This is as delectable a record as you will find in 2023. It is original in how it is written, while being produced perfectly. The mutants of the world will find a safe place to ooze, rot, and rock out. A genre uniting and technical monstrosity…said with the best of intentions.
9 out of 10: Brodsky is one of the most dynamic singers in metal. His guitar work is on equal footing. Monster player.
