There is nothing more exciting then waking up to a killer band surprising you with new noise. There is nothing more irritating when it is a power ballad…..and a really lousy one at that. The original version was performed by the Shakespears Sister’s.
Let me be clear, Tobias Forge is an established song writer who has written the soundtracks to our lives. With Stay, the cover comes across like a wet blanket of a ballad. Boring is the operative word.
In the past when Ghost wrote a delicate song, it would be what I would call…soft blasphemy! The lyrical content would generally irritate most organized religions. With Stay, it a slow and unfulfilling burn with a poor choice of a cover and lame song execution. Simple strums and nasally vocals from Forge. The keyboards are as unmoving as watching CSPAN!
This is the laziest song Ghost has ever put forth. As a fan since the beginning, I found this song as a throw away track that never should have seen the light of day. It is even more disappointing coming off Phantomime, which was a killer cover EP that saw the band make guitars the driving force again.
Pass on this incredibly disappointing track!
I also found it interesting that Stay is not on Instagram as a sample option. Maybe they are equally as perturbed!
