Let’s continue the run of Death Metal by pulling the skin curtains back on the latest release from the godfathers of gore, Cannibal Corpse's "Chaos Horrific". This album is definitely not for the faint of heart, with its grotesque and disturbing album cover featuring what looks like Cannibal Corpse take on The Walking Dead, complete with an almost topless lady getting eaten alive. As if that wasn't enough to shock and awe, the music is sure to create nightmares for even the most seasoned death metal sicko!
Leading the carnage on vocals, the mighty Corpsegrinder (George Fisher) continues his historic career as one of the most recognizable voices in extreme metal. His growls and putrid barks perfectly match the aggressive and chaotic sound orchestrated by Alex Webster (bass), Paul Mazurkiewicz, Rob Barrett (drums), and Erik Rutan (lead Guitar and is also the vocalist in Hate Eternal).
Lyrically, "Overlords of Violence" is exactly what you'd expect from Cannibal Corpse: gory, grotesque imagery about all sorts of violence and bloodshed. It's not exactly the type of subject matter I'm usually drawn to, but there's something undeniably compelling about the way the lyrics mesh with the music. When Corpsegrinder growls lines like "Slaughter those that would defy them. Dismember them and mount on spikes Limbs and heads of the defeated sharpened axes cleave;” it's hard not to feel the hair on your neck stand up.
"Summoned for Sacrifice" is a prime example of their trademark brutal and unrelenting death metal sound. With its pummeling drum beats, churning guitars, and guttural vocals, this song is not for the faint of heart. But beneath the seemingly impenetrable wall of noise lies a carefully crafted and expertly executed piece of music. The band's gory chops is on full display here, as they navigate complex time signatures and switch effortlessly between blistering riffs, blast beats and shredding guitar solos.
Overall, "Chaos Horrific" is a strong addition to the Cannibal Corpse catalogue. It's not their most groundbreaking release, but it's a solid effort that shows they still have what it takes to rule the death metal wasteland.
8 out of 10. Be sure to listen to "Drain You Empty". It is an audio nightmare!
