What I loved about Volbeat was the clear collision of rockabilly meets Metallica. Michael Poulen is a monster singer and a polished guitar player. However, in recent years Volbeat had become more mainstream and gone were the chuggah riffs that dominated Volbeat’s early work!
Enter this crushing side project Asinhell. Made up of Michael Poulsen: Guitar, Marc Grewe: Vocals, and Morten Toft Hansen: Drums, this first track is a lesson in how to write bruising metal that perfectly combines death metal, black metal and thrash.
“Fall if The Loyal Order” lays the gauntlet down with a brooding guitar intro that gives way to a frantic onslaught of riffs. Grewe is gutteral and nasty as he tells a story about how easy it is to be drunk on power and perpetuate war. Musically the track is a modern Death which I absolutely love. You can hear slight tonality nods to Volbeat (expected), but this is a very perfectly blended track that sits across multiple genres. Again…modern Death. Somewhere Chuck is tipping his cap!
Metalblade Records & Brian Slagel have a winner on their hands. If this is a sign of things to come, give me a pinwheel and sign me up for the Asinhell bandwagon. It is obvious this scratches more then an itch for one Michael Poulsen! Raging perfection.
9 out of 10: one of my favorite tracks of 2023. Look for Impii Hora (Latin for Ungodly Hour) this fall on Metalblade Records.
